Dermaplaning is an exfoliating procedure that uses a blade or scalpel to exfoliate the top layers of the dead skin called the Horney Layer and also removes the fine vellus hair, or peach face, on the face. This is a form of mechanical exfoliation.
The benefits of removing the top layer of dead skin are for:
- Better product penetration
- More even penetration of corrective products
- Stimulates collagen & elastin that in turn helps supports the cell walls of your skin
- Grade I acne, if there’s no inflammation, will help clear blocked follicles (which is one cause of acne) and drive acne corrective products deeper
This procedure is ideal for a client that has good skin health and overall health. Being compliant is key since your skin will be instantly compromised, so post-care is important.
I’m partial to dermaplaning if you’re experiencing hormonal concerns such as PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or menopause, you may cause you to experience hirsutism. Hirsutism is extra hair growth caused by an increase of the male hormone (androgen). This may cause coarse hair that is hard to maintain by dermaplaning. When hair is shaved, the middle part of the hair (which is the thickest), is cut. This illusion may make the hair appear to be longer, thicker, and darker. Waxing, electrolysis, or laser hair removal is recommended to minimize excessive hair growth if you’re experiencing these conditions. Talk to your physician about intrinsic ways to reduce your androgen hormone.
